Questions
Where does the location come from?
From the GPS tags inside the EXIF block, written by the phone or camera at the moment of the shot. The viewer converts them to decimal coordinates and offers a map link. If nothing is shown, the file carries no position — or it was removed before the photo reached you.
Why do some photos show almost nothing?
Messaging apps and social networks strip metadata on upload, and screenshots never had any. A photo forwarded through WhatsApp arrives carrying nothing but pixels.
Can it read HEIC?
Not yet — browsers cannot read HEIC metadata without decoding the whole file. JPG, PNG and WebP are fully supported.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is parsed inside your browser and nothing is sent to a server, which is rather the point of a tool for checking what a photo reveals.
Is this the same as "exif viewer"?
Yes. It also gets called "check photo metadata" and "see where a photo was taken" and "image metadata viewer". They all describe this one job, and this page does it.
