Questions
Will the file land inside 250 KB – 5 MB?
The pixel size is fixed first, then the JPEG quality is searched downwards until the file fits under the upper limit, so both rules on the form are met at once. If it comes out lighter than the minimum — a 140 × 60 signature encodes to a few KB at any quality — it is re-encoded at full quality and then padded with an inert comment block until the byte count clears the minimum. The picture itself is unchanged; the portal's size check is what that padding is for.
Why 1200×1600 pixels?
It is a fixed requirement on a number of application portals, which reject anything that is not exactly that size. This tool produces those dimensions exactly rather than approximately.
What if my image is a different shape?
You can either fit it inside the box and pad the spare space with white, which keeps the whole mark visible, or fill the box and crop the overflow. White padding is the safer default for a signature, where a cropped descender changes how it looks.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser using the canvas built into it. Nothing is sent to a server, nothing is stored, and the page keeps working if you disconnect from the internet after it loads.
Is this the same as "nz passport photo online"?
Yes. It also gets called "new zealand passport photo size" and "passport photo 1200 x 1600". They all describe this one job, and this page does it.
