Questions
Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC I started with?
Because HEIC is simply a better codec. Apple switched to it precisely so photos would take less space, and the same picture stored as JPG routinely comes out 10–30% larger. Nothing has gone wrong — you are trading file size for a format that every website, printer and older program will actually open. If the size matters, run the result through one of the compress-to-a-size tools afterwards.
Why did the first conversion take a few seconds?
No browser except Safari can read HEIC on its own, so the page has to fetch a decoder the first time you use it — around 700 KB, once. After that it is cached and conversions are quick. It is also why this only loads on the HEIC pages and costs nothing anywhere else on the site.
Does converting lose any quality?
A little, because JPG is a lossy format — it is re-encoded at high quality, so the difference is very hard to see. Anything transparent becomes white, which JPG cannot avoid.
Is there a file size limit?
No. The conversion runs on your own machine, so the only ceiling is your device's memory.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Your browser decodes and re-encodes it locally, and nothing is sent to a server.
Is this the same as "heic to jpg converter"?
Yes. It also gets called "convert heic to jpg" and "iphone photo to jpg". They all describe this one job, and this page does it.
